Our Historic division focuses on renovating and restoring historically accurate buildings. In the Charleston, SC area, this can mean buildings that are aged from 50 to more than 200 years old. Whether the building is still in use, is abandoned, or is new construction on a historic location, our team can provide the following key project attributes:
We have worked with, and have a strong appreciation of, most of the historic building methods and materials used in the Charleston SC area over the years. Included in this are various types of historic brick, oyster shell mortar, rough-hewn lumber, logs, wood joining methods, roofing systems and flashing technology, etc. that were used in various building construction periods. Historic Construction Practices:
Most buildings that are more than 50 years old exhibit issues, such as the alignment of walls, level of floors and ceilings, and squareness of openings. In a historic, but static, structure this is typically not a major concern; however, when a modification is to be performed, a decision must be made whether or not to correct, or adapt to, these types of issues.
